Youth hockey balls are larger (roughly 4" diameter) than regulation balls (roughly 3" diameter) and they're a bit lighter too. They are easier to control than regulation balls and, especially when playing on grass, young players are more successful---they push and hit the ball and it goes! Whereas regulation balls sink in the grass and frustrate a beginner's beginning.
