WHY ARE YOUTH HOCKEY BALLS SO LARGE
We want young players trying field hockey to be immediately successful -- not frustrated. The very first level of being successful means trying to move the ball and it goes! That's one of the reasons youth soccer is so popular. The kid shows up, moves their tiny foot at a great big ball to kick it and it goes! Things are significantly more difficult in field hockey. First, get a right-sized stick. Then, learn how to hold it. Learn how to move it in such a way that the little tiny end of the stick makes contact with the little ball that's a stick length away from their body. Do all that with a regulation size and weight hockey ball is, in and of itself, a task. Now, try moving a ball that's on long fiber turf or grass and most kids experience instant failure! How about we give the kid a bigger target that's also lighter in weight? A youth hockey ball does that. A youth hockey ball also has a larger amount of surface area in contact with the ground than that of a regulation size hockey ball -- it doesn't fall into small bunches of grass that kids have to hit it out of to make progress. All of these factors contribute to making a young hockey player more successful.
